The 100 Languages at Story House Aberglasslyn

Educational Leader, Jessica Jarvis writes…

I have always been inspired as an educator by the ‘100 languages’ of children by Loris Malaguzzi, Founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach.

Malaguzzi wrote ‘The One Hundred Languages of Children‘ in recognition of the multitude of ways in which they can express their ideas, thoughts, feelings or frustrations.

A child can speak and listen in a languages’ most basic form. For children, there are one hundred ways to communicate or express themselves through their play, touch, thoughts, speech, joy, love, songs, understanding, worlds, dreams, culture, body, mind, reality, fantasy, reason, sky and the earth.

Malaguzzi suggests that sometimes a child is told to separate these languages from their mind and body, however we need to support a child’s unique ability to express themselves through these hundred ways so that they can belong, be and become.

What a marvellous time it is to be alive when you’re a child.  As we grow up and become adults with the responsibilities of life, these languages may stay or disappear. At Story House Early Learning, Aberglasslyn, we take pride in knowing that our programs foster the  children’s 100 languages to  ensure growth and development.”
