National Reconciliation Week was held from 27 May to 3 June surrounding the theme ‘More Than a Word’. The theme recognises that reconciliation means acting and urges the reconciliation movement towards braver and more impactful action. It is a journey for all Australians as individuals, families, communities, and organisations.
At Story House Tarneit, we invited all children to join in our different activities from handprints to dot painting and we noticed the children reacted in many ways as they experienced the different stages of creation.
While the children were creating their art, there were lots of questions and discussions around the colour of the flag that symbolises the unity and identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. What they seemed most intrigued by was the handprints – black represents the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander of Australia; red represents red earth; yellow represents the sun.
