Tell us about your career at Story House?
I recently commenced my career at Kids House Cheltenham in January. I commenced as the 2IC, assisting different educators along with the Service Manager to ensure children are cared for and to help oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cheltenham service.
What led you to a career in the childcare industry?
I came to Australia in 2012 from Hong Kong where I was studying at high school. Beyond completing my International Baccalaureate Diploma from high school, I progressed towards my Bachelor in Monash University. I focused my work on children and then worked towards completing my Master’s degree in teaching Early Years and Primary education. I was fortunate enough to find different opportunities to work with different age groups which helped me make the decision to focus on the kinder age group.
What do you love about the service you work in?
Kids House Cheltenham has been the warmest childcare centre that I have worked at throughout my career. The care and dedication that all educators are holding in the service creates a positive cycle of feedback and responses from both families and the children themselves. Educators here at Kids House Cheltenham are very keen to partner alongside families to assist them in any way and the partnership with the families is the best part of it.
During my time as the 2IC, Monique, Riki and our Business Operations Manager, Melinda was supportive and helpful as I was getting used to the new role. I am looking forward to working as a part of the management team alongside this wonderful service, as well as enhancing the values and philosophy that we have set to provide the best possible experience for all families and children.
Who inspires you and why?
My middle school teacher inspired me to be the person I am today, he is a good friend of mine and has been teaching me for years, educating me not only in middle school, but also sharing experiences of his life and ways of approaching challenges. He has been using his experience to demonstrate the core human values, such as empathy, sympathy, kindness, and respect, in his teaching approach, he has also been constantly adjusting to fit and include all of his students according to their personal needs and interests.
Throughout my personal practice and developing my philosophy, I have been constantly using the values that I was taught to reflect upon myself, ensuring I am demonstrating the best part of myself as I conduct my teaching and practice. I believe each child is unique and should be respected individually and provide the opportunity to express, discover and explore the world and who they are. Diversity is also a key aspect, as not only is it a critical part of Australian values, but also assists children in developing respect towards differences and being inclusive.
Working within Story House has been a wonderful experience as the core values are the same as my own. Story House strives to create an inclusive environment which celebrates the individual through supporting their family and the community.
What are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about Early Childhood Education, where the beginning of the child’s experience affects how the child perceives different values significantly. I also believe in collaboration with family members and the positive impact that has in a child’s learning.
I believe that children are capable, competent, and unique learners. Each has a right to feel safe, secure, and supported in their environment. As Early Childhood Educators we need to foster nurturing, respectful, and encouraging relationships that are significant in their development.
In addition, we need to understand the families and children within our centre and allow the children to freely explore, learn, and express their own individuality and abilities alongside their peers, educators, and the community.
