From Sunday 4th of July until Sunday the 11th of July, Australia celebrated NAIDOC week. This year’s theme was “Heal Country”. It was amazing to see every room across the service getting involved in celebrating our country’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s culture, art, and history. Experiences the children engaged in throughout the week helped them to develop their respect for and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Our Nursery rooms engaged in variety of sensory- based experiences. Platypus one enjoyed an open-ended natural material display to play with and explore. They also engaged in painting with the colours of the Aboriginal people’s flag. These experiences helped develop their curiosity and their fine motor skills as they manipulated the materials. Platypus two explored the story of the rainbow snake by painting a large recycled cardboard snake using their fingertips. They also engaged their fine motor skills to try drawing some symbols into rice.
The Koalas also explored symbolism through drawing in sand with sticks, demonstrating their creativity and their fine motor capabilities. The children also explored the meaning of the colours of the Aboriginal flag through an open-ended playdough experience, sparking conversations and developing understanding.
The Kangaroos engaged in discussions and read stories about the Acknowledgement of Country and the different Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander “countries” all over Australia. They were also inspired by the NAIDOC week poster and used it to try drawing the different shapes they could see on it. They explored the way the Aboriginal people of the Papunya Central Desert used symbolism by creating some symbols on the light table with coloured stones. This experience demonstrated their creativity and created discussions about the symbols meanings.
The Lizard children explored some Dreamtime stories, including “Tiddalick the Frog”. The children made their own puppets for a shadow puppet show, fostering their communication and teamwork skills. They also explored bush tucker through reading stories and making their own bush tucker out of clay. The Lizards demonstrated their creativity and ability to work with a variety of mediums.
