WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BEC HANDASYDE AT OAK ON ERIN EARLY LEARNING
Oak on Erin Early Education located in Wilsonton, Toowoomba officially opened its doors to the community in January this year and no one is more excited than Rebecca Handasyde. Simply known as ‘Bec’…Bec joins our service as the new Kindy Teacher and Educational Leader with an extraordinary reputation amongst local families and within the early childhood teaching community. Bec’s 18 years’ experience coupled with her exceptional leadership qualities sees her also becoming a mentor to the Educational Leaders across our other Toowoomba-based services, Oak on Jellicoe and Oak on South.
Bec is delighted to be part of a team responsible for opening a brand-new childcare service to children and families and is relishing the opportunity to shape the educational practice of the broader team. Bec believes a great educator provokes a child’s learning to wonder with and alongside them. She says that Educators are there to scaffold children’s investigations and reflections as they explore through play. Bec prides herself on creating respectful relationships with families and coworkers which aligns with our Story House philosophy and values – it’s a perfect match!
Bec’s teaching philosophy has been influenced both personally and professionally. Her Mum was a teacher and she saw first-hand the hard work and rewards that the role brought to her life. She aspired to be like her Mum and, from a young age, would tell everyone she was going to be a Principal and work her way up to become a teacher! She has also had the opportunity to work with two teachers very early on in her career who mentored her practice and shared the joy and advocacy of the early childhood profession.
As a lifelong learner, Bec wishes she could play the piano. She learned the flute and the piccolo through primary and high school but quickly realized they are not instruments easily played with young children since you cannot sing and play at the same time. The best resource in her teaching toolkit is her Wombat Stew billy can that she uses with her favorite Mem Fox story ‘Wombat Stew’. It houses all the stew ingredients. She says it’s a story she remembers being read to her and now she retells it frequently using the 15-year-old props which have been loved by many cohorts of Kindy children.
When Bec isn’t busy teaching and mentoring, you’ll find her with her ear buds in, music on and walking around her beloved Toowoomba community. If you see her, smile and wave or go and visit her in our brand-new service at 23-25 Erin Street, Wilsonton. She will be delighted to see you and show you and your family around our shiny, new service.
