Our Service Manager, Thalia and Educator, Brittany did an amazing job delivering gift boxes filled with delicious treats like beautifully iced cakes, cupcakes and decadent chocolates for people to enjoy with a cuppa – everyone deserves a well-earned break with a little sweet treat occasionally.
Thalia and Brittany were excited to see the smiles on the faces of workers in and around the offices of the Police Head Quarters, Pullman/Mercure Motels, Supreme Court, State Law, 300George and the general community who all graciously accepted our delightfully sweet treats.
Educators at Story House Roma Street always strive to creature a culture of kindness and this continued back at the service during discussions with children about ways they can show kindness to others.
Empathy is hardwired in us from birth, and we intuitively feel what others feel. It’s why 2-year-olds might burst into tears when they see another toddler fall in the playground, and it’s a perfect opportunity to articulate that experience for him or her: “You feel sad because you care about your friend and she hurt herself.”
Thinking “What would that feel like?” is one of the most powerful habits we can instil in our children. You can’t be a compassionate person unless you have an active imagination—you have to be able to step into someone else’s shoes.
Raising thoughtful, kind children is the most important thing we can do as parents and the best way to do this is to demonstrate kind behaviour ourselves and it’s so simple….hug someone who’s sad, say thank you and make eye contact, take a meal to a sick neighbour or donate time or money to those in need – acts of kindness are endless.
And lastly, kindness also means giving your children, especially when there are siblings in the mix, a feeling of abundance—that there is enough love, praise, laughter, and attention to go around.
