Building a brand-new early learning service from the ground up provides Story House Early Learning with the unique opportunity to really put children first when it comes to their learning and comfort. Through the planning and design stages of this new-build at Doreen, we’ve been able to combine what we know about how children learn and develop and incorporate this into a customised outdoor playscape that inspires creativity and imagination as well as being safe and most importantly – fun!
At the heart of this modern and fresh design are the spectacular natural and organic elements; from the creek bed with low bridge, log stools, rock seats, waterfall feature and plants to the decorative screens nestled in green shrubbery and garden beds with stepping stones, timber benches and tree trunks all beckoning for children to let their little imaginations run wild.
These days, it’s out with the primary coloured play structures and in with materials and constructs that mimic the real world and we will deliver this in spades. We’ve incorporated lots of natural, rustic timber features including a wave timber fence, tee pee, balance beams, a stage (for shows and dancing of course!) as well as arbours and planter box seating where children can grow herbs, veggies or flowers – the choices are endless.
But it doesn’t end there. Incorporating sensory and musical play were both important elements to the Doreen design and we know that children will be able to use all of their senses to explore and make sense of this enriching play space by walking the sensory path..touching, smelling, seeing, moving and hearing. With it’s noise-inducing pipes, spoons, saucepans, racks and other upcycled materials, we foresee the sensory play wall being used quite frequently by sound enthusiasts. The musical path is also a great addition with its rustic timber frame and metal tubes.
Outdoor play is so important for children’s physical health, development, and self-confidence. It helps increase children’s activity levels, gives them greater freedom to run, jump, climb and twirl, provides opportunities for hands-on learning as well as helping to practice social skills, take risks, and develop a lifelong connection with nature.
As an extension of it’s indoor space which is just as beautiful and engaging, you can see that Story House has given much consideration to how children will use the new Doreen playscape, what it will look like and how it will feel. You won’t want to leave!
